They'll be a burden until level five or so, but then you'll start to see them pull their own weight.
Either way, you need someone who can sling spells. I don't remember if IWD allows for sorcerers. I tend to prefer cleric because they are a bit more healing oriented and can wear heavy armor, but either way you need at least one healer. They can be multiclassed (fighter/thief is probably the best thief multiclass for IWD), but up that disable traps and lockpicking over all else if you multiclass. You'll want a rogue for traps, chests, and sheer backstabbity fun.
Cleric can fit in here, but they don't get quite as many hit points, and getting your spells interrupted is annoying, so they're probably not best for your main tank.
